Little White Dress

A few weeks ago, after speaking at A Reason to Stand, a sweet lady came up and shared that she too had lost a child, 25 years ago. She made the comment that I was still so fresh and new to the grieving process. Her words surprised me, because being six years out, and constantly learning of so many kids who pass away, I often feel like I’m an old timer. Her comment has changed the way I react to my grief, and I’m thankful.

This past Sunday, Pat and I were scrambling to get everyone ready for 9:00 am church. I slept in, due to being up most of the night with Oaklee, and it was a struggle to get everyone up and going. I went to Oaklee’s closet and realized her dress was nowhere to be found, and instead of looking for it, I just grabbed a little white dress that had belonged to Preslee. Oaklee has worn a handful of Preslee’s outfits, so I didn’t think twice about it. Before I ran downstairs to jump in the car, I reached for a blanket in Oaklee’s closet, not paying much attention to which one I grabbed, and made it to the car just as Pat had finished buckling everyone in.

We walked into church with just one minute to spare. Pat sat down holding Oaklee, and a little later handed her to me. I immediately laid her on my lap and when I glanced down at her, my grief immediately pounced, and tears began to fall. As I looked at Oaklee, everything screamed Preslee. From her dress, to her face that is rounding out more and more like Preslee’s, she was even chewing on two little fingers like Preslee did. I could have sworn I was back attending church in Philadelphia with Preslee on my lap. The only thing missing was a big gerber daisy bow.

The harder I tried to stop the tears, the faster they fell. That’s when I noticed the blanket… it had been given to Preslee in the hospital right before she passed away, and the mix of the two was just too much for me to handle at the moment. Seconds later, Pat reached across the bench to tap me on the shoulder and ask me what was wrong. I just shook my head, feeling embarrassed, and said I was fine. I hated that I couldn’t shake an old memory that had resurfaced, and it left a consuming ache in my chest to hold Preslee again.

I often feel embarrassed in situations like this. I’m usually so tired of grieving that I wonder when these moments will ever come to an end. I tend to get a little hard on myself, and sternly tell myself to stop crying. But as I was nursing Oaklee in the mother’s lounge during the second hour of church, the comment made by that sweet lady came to mind and changed my way of thinking. With an entire life left to live, I really am in the beginning stages of grief. Though I don’t grieve on a daily basis anymore, there are still moments that take my breath away and leave me trying to figure out the best way to handle the new situation I’ve been presented with.

I now vow to be softer on myself. If you’re anything like me, and have moments you feel like you should be further along in your grief, I hope you’ll join me and try to change the way you think. No matter where we are in our journey, there will be moments that unexpectedly arise, and as painful as they might be, I hope we can learn to embrace them. Because if I’ve learned anything over the past six years, it’s how holy grief truly is. Though it is overwhelming, grief stems from the love we have for those we’ve lost, and I wouldn’t trade that love for anything.

After Sunday’s experience, I think I’ll hold on to that little white dress, even after Oaklee outgrows it. It will serve as a reminder to be a little softer on myself. Grief will continually be teaching me new lessons, and instead of fighting it, someday, I hope I can learn to fully embrace it.

No Regrets

Oh, what I wouldn’t do to be able to pick up this sweet little girl and just squeeze her.
I’d definitely never let go.

One of my only regrets dealing with Preslee happened the night of her accident. As we were leaving, Pat was able to steal a hug from her, but before he could hand her over to me, she wiggled her way out of his arms and chased after her cousin, Ace. I tried to grab her as she ran past, but the quick little thing slipped out of my fingers. I remember thinking, “It will only be a couple of hours.” never dreaming it would be the last time I saw her healthy.

I’m getting emotional thinking about that night,
so before the ugly tears begin to fall, I’m off to go and hug my three boys.
It’s something I make sure happens Every.Single.Day.

If I have any piece of advice it would be,go and hug your little ones today,
(give your little girls an extra hug for me)

In fact, lets make sure to hug our kiddos multiple times a day,
because life is precious, and tender,
and no one knows what tomorrow holds.

Wightman Family Reunion 2012

The Wightman Family Reunion was held at our family cabin in Driggs Idaho.
My Uncle Todd and his wife Janeen were in charge,
and set the bar incredibly high for my parents to follow next year.
It was that fun.

(Missing all of you who couldn't make it)

It was an action packed good time.
Pat gets a kick out of family gatherings, because he didn't grow up with a lot of cousins.
My mom has five brothers, (my dad also has 5 siblings) which means lots of cousins and family time.
Pat loved the family softball game, & Ledger was dying to join in on the fun.

Girl time

This kid was loving the dirt and Cheetos.

Hyrum, I wish your family lived closer, you are hilarious!

The Birthday Boys.

We decided Huntsman Springs rivaled Philly's celebration in our book, but Pat said he liked Driggs better because he wasn't as claustrophobic. :)

Who knew Greg and Hyrum could dance so well?
The live band created a fun atmosphere.

Little sis admiring Kimball's new phone for his Birthday.

Ledger sure does love Papa.

It was a fabulous way to kick off our 4th of July celebration!
I'm already excited to do it all over again next year.

Our Nation's Capital

Photobucket
Meet Abe. He was our countries 16th President. I LOVE Abe and always have. I've studied Abe's life, and did you know when he died there were four newspaper clippings found in his wallet. Supposedly, those were the only positive things he ever saw written about himself while serving as President.

Ford's theatre
This is where Abraham Lincoln was shot. I really enjoyed going to Ford's Theatre. This theatre is still used today for shows. That picture of George Washington is the original that was up there during the incident. Another Fact: The last thing Abe signed as President was the making of Secret Service.

Just like the other two cities, we did another bus tour. These are some of the places we visited. And since we were on the bus, I didn't get very many shots with people in them. We also went to the Halocaust Museum, it is unbelievable to see what happened at that time. The museum is very well done, and helps you realize your many blessings.

On top of the bus! Thanks mom and dad for everything! You did a lot for us, we had such a fun time! My mom leaves tomorrow morning, I'm kind of sad about it. These two weeks have flown by!

Philadelphia

First day of the trip, we toured Philadelphia. We took a bus tour which dropped us off at all the major sites. I've already posted pics of all the places, so I won't bore you again. Pat met up with us for dinner at Geno's for a Philly Cheesesteak. It was fun. We ended the day with a Phillies game, it was Rhett's first Professional Baseball game. And the camera died right before we got to the stadium.

These three pics were taken at the Betsy Ross house. George Washington just showed up at her house one day and asked her to sew an American flag.

Deal or No Deal

For the Fourth of July, the wives headed down to Downtown Philly for the celebration. They blocked off streets and had a lot of fun things to do. Later that night they had a free Sheryl Crow concert for the public and set off fireworks from the steps of the Art museum (where Rocky is). It was so much fun!

Well, while walking around, a lady approached us, handed us a paper and said we should go apply for Deal or No Deal. All you had to do was fill out the paper, have a short interview, and then you would go from there. We said "what the heck." I filled out the random questions, was rushed in with 6 strangers and we had about a minute to talk to her. I made it through the first interview!

Monday I showed up with a thick packet of radom questions that I answered. Here are a few.

Write a short rap or poem.
Please Draw a self portrait.
If you were Aladin, what 3 wishes would you ask for?
What's your most embarrassing moment?
And many more.

There were about 50 of us, we all stayed in the same room. They had us go up one at a time and stand next to one of their suitcases, and just have a conversation with them. They taped the whole thing. They asked you the most random things, They noticed I was Mormon because I attended BYU-I. They called me the rebel mormon because I had a skirt showing my knees. I told them about all the crazy rules associated with the Honor Code. And then about my most embarrassing moment, and they wanted me to act it out. Let's just say it had to deal with being so nervous for a track meet I peed my pants while running the hurdles....

Afterwards, we had to open the suitcase (Some had difficult time) and it had the $1 inside. We had to act like we had openend it for the person playing, so it meant they had just won the $500,000. We then had to scream and jump and do what ever our reaction would be. Then everyone else had to celebrate in the audience. Just imagine doing this 50 times over and over, trying to act so excited and stand out! Four hours later, we finished and they told us if we made it we would get a call anywere from July to end of December.

Needless to say, even if I don't get a call, I got to listen to 50 fascinating stories. There were some strange, smart, crazy, and just plain weird people. I laughed more than I had in a long time. But I'm not going to lie, I'm hoping for a call, so wish me luck!

Hi, we're the Sullengers! Life turned upside down for us in 2010 when we lost our daughter in an accidental drowning. Since then, we've documented our highs (life with all five of our kids) and our lows (struggles with grief) but amongst everthing we've experienced, we know as long as we hold on to one another we can get through anything that comes our way.
