Let There Be No Empty Chairs

If I have one dream,
to be surrounded by all my children.

IMG_8170ed

Ezra Taft Benson, a former President of  the LDS church, and his wife used to make their home their top priority. As they would teach their children the gospel, they would also emphasize they wanted their family to have no “empty chairs,” in the eternities.

Months ago we bought a new kitchen table. It seats six and contains a leaf that creates plenty of room to grow. I instantly fell in love with this table when I saw it in the store. It was being sold with gorgeous white tufted chairs, but with three young boys, I instantly knew they would be ruined after one meal. So I swapped them out for something sturdy that I knew could withstand our crazy boys… One day right?

IMG_8159ed

After the table was delivered, I was absolutely giddy. I could hardly wait to eat dinner on it. For eight years we had owned a tiny little table that was difficult to fit our entire family around. Often times, Pat or I wouldn’t eat at the table with the kids, it was just too small.

That night as we sat down for dinner,  I happily looked around the table. I had cooked one of our favorite meals, our boys were spread out and weren’t fighting or stealing each other’s food, (Amazing right?) and everything seemed perfect. As I sat across from Pat, my eyes unexpectedly fell on the empty chair next to him. Without warning, tears started streaming down my face. That empty chair screamed to me that we were missing Preslee.

I was instantly embarrassed. The last thing I wanted Pat to see was me crying after he bought me a brand new table. As I tried to hide my tears, I felt two little arms wrap around me. Ledger, my observant little five year old, had quietly climbed out of his chair and walked over to give me a hug. He didn’t say anything, he usually doesn’t, but he just stood there with his arms tightly wrapped around me. As I stared at that empty chair, the direct thought came to mind, “It won’t be forever.”

Since then, that empty chair has served as a reminder that Preslee is still our anchor up in heaven. Though life and trials can be difficult and consuming, it really is true, they won’t last forever. I desperately hope Pat and I can teach our boys that they can do hard things and though it won’t always be easy, hopefully my dream will one day come true—that there really won’t be any empty chairs.

"God intended the family to be eternal," President Benson has said. "With all my soul, I testify to the truth of that declaration. May He bless us to strengthen our homes and lives of each family member so that in due time we can report to our Heavenly Father in His celestial home that we are all there - father, mother, sister, brother. . . . Each chair is filled. We are all back home." (The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, page 493.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I loved President Benson’s message so much that I reached out to Robin, at Chirp Chirp Designs to create a rustic custom sign to be hung above our table. I absolutely love how it turned out and everything it stands for. Robin has agreed to team up with us for a $50 giveaway for one of our readers to her shop! She’s incredibly talented and wonderful to work with. She has now made three custom signs for our family, all of which I love.

TO ENTER:

  1. Follow The Sullengers and Chirp Chirp Designs on Instagram.
  2. Like the photo of the sign shown above on The Sullengers Instagram account.
  3. Comment on the same photo tagging two friends. Each other friend tagged will be an extra entry.

The winner will be announced Saturday night at 10am MST. Good luck!

Aloha

Kauai

I’m sure you’ve noticed there has been little posting…here’s why!

  • The weather has been weirdly amazing this year, so we ran like crazy to get our Sno Shack open about a month earlier than usual. That included painting, replacing the floor, interviews (Nearly 20 girls) and a whole lot more. For about a week straight my boys saw very little of me.
  • Pat and I were fortunate enough to spend 8 days in Kauai! It was unreal, and something we will never forget. We cannot wait to explain the meaning behind all of it.(Next post, stay tuned!) We even left our kids at home… a big milestone for us :)
  • We were recently made an offer on our shack, and decided it was time to sell. Today we handed everything over, (I’ll admit I got quite sentimental, I’ve ran that shack for the past 9 years!) But for a few days it took all our energy to get everything ready for the new owners.
  • Have you ever left your kids for 8 days? They are pretty attached to your hip when you get back. I’ve been trying to balance lots of cuddle time and work. The boys usually win. :)
  • We move this Saturday! Cottonwood Heights, here we come! Can you believe it? It seemed so far away, and now it’s here! We just started packing today, (We’ve got a lot left to do) I’m desperately trying to stay in vacation mode, and not let the stress take over. Wish us luck!

There’s a lot of change taking place in our lives right now, and though we’re excited, the thought of leaving the place Preslee lived her life is more difficult than I thought it would be. As I’ve been packing up, it’s been bittersweet to find little reminders tucked away in boxes and bags in our basement. But I can honestly say the experiences in Hawaii have helped immensely. Our Heavenly Father is very aware of our needs.

Backyard Shenanigans

We had such a great response to the water safety post. Tiffany wrote a great post yesterday, make sure to check it out. I was excited when EIRMC, the hospital that first treated Preslee, e-mailed me and asked if they could share the printable. We feel like it’s really circulating, (Thank you to those who shared it) and hoping to help save a few kids from drowning this summer.

Speaking of summer, I hadn’t realized it had been an entire week since I last posted! Oops. We have spent every second that we could outside. We are beyond thrilled it is warm outside.

summer

This took place at my parent’s house. I busted up laughing when my mom sent me this picture.
Definitely
Idaho Redneck style.

We gave Ledger his Birthday present a month early. I’m more than ready to help him burn off a little energy during the day. I was beyond thrilled to realize I have an outdoor play pen. No escaping babies!

We opened the Sno Shack this week. Yay! That’s what’s taken most of our time. We had a great opening day, and am looking forward to a fabulous summer. All of our employees returned from last year, which I’ve never had before. I think it will help the shack run more smoothly. We bought a new shaver! We’re hoping that will speed things up. And my child who doesn’t eat sweets, actually tried a sno cone. I was thrilled! I know I should be happy with how healthy the kid is, but c’mon, his parents own a Sno Shack and is probably the only child in the world hasn’t tried one. Ha He’s never had ice cream either, so the cold was a little overwhelming for him.

If you’ve ever lost someone, you understand how difficult it becomes to function. After Preslee passed away, we kind of stopped focusing on our huge back yard. We did bare minimum, and after a few years, we’ve decided it’s time to get it back in shape. We’ve spent a lot of time doing yard work, and we’ve also decided to grow our first garden. Wish us luck!

Pat trimmed all the trees, and here’s to hoping our pear tree produces a ton of fruit!

And I like to call these two boys Seek and Destroy. They are in to EVERYTHING. I’m amazed at the havoc the two can create. I’ve had to purchase a couple of extra baby gates. They’ve spent their days outside bear crawling because they hate the grass, and eating dandelions…

summer

I’m sure I sound like a broken record, but since taking Cannon Ball and Cruizer off of milk, life has been amazing. I haven’t taken one day for granted.

Here’s to a summer filled with sno cones and days spent outside.

September

Patrick
After taking nearly two years off from school, started back up on Monday.
Is finished making ice and sugar water, because the Sno Shack is closed!
Loves playing cards lately, because he's been winning nearly every game!

Ashley
Escaped to UT for the weekend.
Decided to be domestic by freezing peaches, and canning salsa.
Playing in a women's basketball league once a week.

Preslee
Teaching her parent's this quote to be true.

Ledger
After watching people at the football game clap a couple of weeks ago, suddenly decided his mom isn't absolutely nuts after all. He now claps after everything he does!

Looks so much older after getting his first, real, haircut with clippers.

Has been dressed in onsie PJ's for days, because his mom feels like it makes him look a little more like her baby again.

Have you heard of Bloglovin?
I've used it for awhile now and love it.

It's an easy way to follow your favorite blogs.
Go to their site,
 search for your favorite blogs,
follow them,
and Bloglovin will send you a daily e-mail, listing all the blogs that have been updated.
It makes it nice and easy.
Especially for those who don't blog themselves.

Anyway, its supposed to be about 90 degrees today.
So we're off to have some fun in the sun, we can't seem to get enough of it lately.
My shoulders are red and crispy from swimming at the lake yesterday...
If you see me at the pool today with a t-shirt on you'll know why.

Here's a few of our adventures from the past couple of weeks.

Ririe Reservoir

 Stampede Days Parade.

Running errands and stocking the shack in style :)

Jack's Blessing

Saturday we stocked the shack and headed to UT for our nephew's blessing in Bountiful.

Ledge slept till Pocatello, then cried the rest of the way there.

We received a call to inform us that the ice machine broke... we ended up having to close the shack early afternoon.
Lost hundreds of $$

UT is HOT! Ledge got a little tan. And wasn't a fan of the water at the pool.

Jack looked adorable in his little blessing outfit. My brother gave a great blessing and it was great to catch up with the fam. And Ledger didn't sleep the entire way home, even though it was nap time. Thank goodness he zonked when we put him down in his crib when we walked in the house.

Thanks for a great weekend Siddoway's!

11 months already?

Wow, time flies.
Yesterday this kiddo reached 11 months.
This 11 months went sooo much faster than the 11 months we spent after losing Pres and waiting for Ledge to arrive.
 His personality is developing,
and Sunday took off running.
And suddenly, wants to cuddle with his mom for the first time in his life... I'll take it :)

Sledge, we love you more than you loved your first sno cone. Next time it will be plain ice, but I just couldn't resist on opening day.

Love ya bud.

Jack Dustin

Congrats to this little guy, Jack, who made his official debut today.
Ledger's first boy cousin on the Siddoway side.
Two boys 10 months apart...sounds like fun :)

Now back to the chaos, we are working hard to get the Sno Shack open by Saturday.

I have a to-do list about a mile long.
I'm training the girls tomorrow, and I'm thinking Gummi Worm (blue raspberry & green apple) will be my first sno cone of the season.
Yum.

If you live in Rigby, go "Like" the Rigby Sno Shack page on Facebook.
We'll be giving away sweet deals all summer long, along with gift cards for every 50 likes on the FB page.

It's a long one!!!

Where to start!!! School started today! I'm on track, Pat is off and very grateful to have the break! I'm taking math for the first time in 5 years, (sophomore year in High school) I could be in trouble! I'll fill you in on the last few weeks of summer!

The Sno Shack is officially closed! It's kind of a relief! By the end of the summer it gets so... High school! haha I definitely had good girls that worked for me, so that always helps! But the week before we were planning on closing this is what I found..

What are the odds? When we went down to Chelsea's wedding, and unexpectedly stayed the night, we totally spaced having someone pick up the two deposits. I mean, who would really break in? But yes, some idiot did, he threw a rock through the window, unlocked it, took the money and left everything else! He even picked up the rock and set it on the counter! I called the cops and the man didn't seem to helpful. I was left a little frustrated. I mean two deposits, and over a hundred dollars just to fix the window!(We're banking on all this money right now haha) But much to our surprise, Friday night I got a call from the Rigby police department. It turns out the idiotic 18 year old male broke into the Junior High and they caught him on tape. He eventually confessed, and I have no idea what happens next! But at least they caught him! I wasn't given a name, but I can't wait to see him....

Pat and 5 of his buddies went on a week long hiking/fishing adventure. They went up to the White clouds, somewhere North of here, somewhat close to Challis I think.. Anyways he had a blast! I was left bored out of my mind, the shack closed so I had to find something to do! So after all the mocking, I let my two friends talk me into trying the "VAMPIRE" books (aka Twilight series), and who would have thought Vampires could be so entertaining? Now I'm hooked! ha They are much better than I expected! But here are some of Pats pics!

Another great piece of news is we survived the summer of weddings!! They are finished! I don't have one single wedding announcement hanging up! After attending so many I can definitely tell ya what works and what doesn't for receptions! Chad and Brittney were married on the 30th. I've never seen so many people at one single wedding! It was about impossible to get some pics, of them but don't worry, I got all the boys. ha But Chad and Brittney are a perfect couple! The reception turned out nice!
Chillin at the luncheon

Then little Abbie Carter was married on the 4th of Sept. She found a great guy, Brek Tolman from Washington. Her reception turned out very Abbie. It looked really nice! I'm excited for them! They're pretty much in love! It's been fun to be able to attend all of my friends weddings in the temple! I didn't have a camera because my husband had it in the mountains, so I stole a few from Mel Walkers blog! If she sees..ha I hope you don't mind! Congrats to all the summer weddings! We're happy for all of you! haha

So this is what we've been up to, and yes I'll post a pic of me soon prego and all. Pat had taken one and then our little dog got a hold of our memory card and well yeah, those pics are long gone! I'm officially 24 weeks!! I'm slowly but surely getting there!!

Hi, we're the Sullengers! Life turned upside down for us in 2010 when we lost our daughter in an accidental drowning. Since then, we've documented our highs (life with all five of our kids) and our lows (struggles with grief) but amongst everthing we've experienced, we know as long as we hold on to one another we can get through anything that comes our way.
