Flavoring on a Sno Cone?

After losing Preslee, I was asked in an e-mail, “If you would have known what was coming, would you have put flavoring on Preslee’s sno cones, rather than just plain ice?”

(No mean comments please, we are sitting in the parking lot, I promise I didn’t drive with her strapped in like that)

Though the question made me smile, it’s something I’ve thought about over the past few years.

What would I have changed about my parenting?
Though I still ration sugar to our boys, because let’s face it, three boys hyped up on sugar is exhausting :) One thing I have changed about my parenting is when I get impulsive ideas, I usually go for it.

I’m sure many of you can relate, there are days I can’t wait to put the boys to bed, sometimes I begin watching the clock around 5:00 pm because I’m so desperate. And a few short hours later I’ll say to Pat,

“I miss them.”

And he always responds the same way.
“Then go wake them up.”

(Cannon)

I can’t tell you how many moments I’ve grabbed Cannon or Cruiz and silently rocked and cuddled them in a blanket. I’ve often said due to their colic, it was extremely difficult to bond with them. This is one of the things that has helped me break down their walls the most.

Or waking up Ledger and laying with him in his bed and having the funniest conversations together. Last night, after giggling together in his bed, we snuck down for a treat at around midnight… I know not great, but it was one of my “Would you have given her flavoring on a sno cone?” kinds of moments.

Though the pain and grief has been excruciating, I’m grateful the trial of losing a child has changed my view on parenthood. I know it will lead to many less “I wish I would have's” when our kids are grown.

And for that, I am thankful.

And just in case you’re wondering, the answer is yes.
What I wouldn’t do to sit down and watch her eat a little pink sno cone.

Love you, monkey.

Gratitude

Our very first Christmas together, Pat and I received a journal from Terry, Pat’s step mom. Inside, we found a talk given by Elder Eyring on the topic of gratitude. Since then, I’ve made it a goal to read it each year.

Elder Eyring encourages individuals to write a few lines in a journal each day on how they have seen the hand of God in their life. I’ve taken the challenge seriously, and haven’t missed a day during the last 8 weeks :) I can honestly say after actively looking for ways that I have been blessed has changed my perspective on life, and left me in a grateful state just in time for Thanksgiving.

I encourage you to listen to Elder Eyring’s advice if you’re looking for a way to make a positive change in your life. {Here} is the talk.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thankful Thursday: A Two Bedroom Home

A few nights ago, Cruiz woke up screaming at 2:00 AM and didn't feel like going back to bed. Then Cannon woke up and assumed the two of us were partying without him, and decided he wanted in on the action. So I recruited Pat, and it turns out he deals with missing sleep worse than I do. :)  We finally got the boys back to sleep about the time we needed to get ready for church…lets just say, it was one heck of a day.

A two bedroom home

Living in a two bedroom house with all three boys crammed into one room is tough at times. I’ll admit I've been frustrated, longing for a little more space. I’m embarrassed to say I've been pretty ungrateful for what I've been given, especially when we can’t seem to escape the crying or when it wakes up the other baby. Poor Ledger, it seems like the only thing he hears during the day is, “Shhhhh, the babies are sleeping!”

After a rough day, it wasn't coincidence that I managed to stumble across an older post, {Click here to read it} It made me wonder how I ever forgot… Even though these boys continually test me with their crying, I thrive from being their mom. After reading my old post, I couldn't help but slip into their bedroom, filled with two cribs and a toddler bed, and count my many blessings as I listened to my three noisy sleepers dream…

 Twinstwo bedroom home

So, tomorrow morning, instead of being frustrated when Ledger wakes the twins up by climbing into one of their cribs, turns on the light, or yells, “Babies, wake up!”  I’m going to savor the moment, and appreciate the fact I get to hear someone call out, “Mama!” again.

My four biggest blessings have all been a part of this room,
what more could I ask for?

Thankful Thursday: Formula

sullengers.com

Ever wonder what it takes to feed two, five month old twin boys? The last little while, it’s taken 20 cans each month.

As soon as the boys were born, I began pumping every three hours, for 20 minutes straight. The result: I was lucky to produce 2 ounces every time I pumped. I worked, and worked with the lactation consultant, but for whatever reason, this time around, I struggled producing milk. After a few months, Pat sat me down and told me to stop stressing, and we decided it just wasn’t working. So, formula it was.

Maybe it’s because one of the first questions I’m usually asked is, “Are you breastfeeding BOTH of them?” I started feeling a little guilty about it. While explaining this to another twin mom, she replied, “Oh, don’t look at it that way, instead, think about how lucky we are to have an alternative.”

You know what, I think I’ll have to agree.

Too bad it just isn’t a little cheaper Smile

Thankful Thursday: Diapers

sullengers.comWe’ve been extremely grateful for the diapers we were given at the baby shower. With three boys in diapers, we’re changing around 18-20 diapers a day. All I can say is thank goodness for disposable diapers, because adding 20 diapers to my very large pile of laundry every day… let’s just say there wouldn’t be any clean diapers to wear.

This kiddo wanted in on the action, and while I was taking a picture, he climbed up the crib and ripped the crib skirt right off. Good thing he’s cute, because I still haven’t found time to fix it. Smile

Thankful Thursday: Piles of Laundry

True statement, I drastically missed washing Preslee’s clothes for an entire year after losing her.

Today I’m grateful for my washing machine and dryer. Heaven help me if I lived in the day I had to wash all our clothes by hand. Who knew twin boys would create so many piles laundry? I’m still trying to catch up!

Hi, we're the Sullengers! Life turned upside down for us in 2010 when we lost our daughter in an accidental drowning. Since then, we've documented our highs (life with all five of our kids) and our lows (struggles with grief) but amongst everthing we've experienced, we know as long as we hold on to one another we can get through anything that comes our way.
