Five

Dear Preslee,

Each year this day reminds me how cruel life can be and how painful living without you really is. December 17th stings my heart in so many ways, and makes me long for you even more.

Five short years ago you entered this world. Five. Five whole years. The age you reach to enter Kindergarten – a huge milestone we’ll never experience. Five. Which means this is our 4th Birthday celebrating without you. Four too many.

sullengers.com(Uncle Jamie, Hudson, and Preslee on her 1st Birthday)

Your dad and I quickly realized our annual trip to SLC wouldn’t be happening this year, due to two little babies. I struggled thinking of a unique way to celebrate you, because I’ve learned service dulls the pain. But all my ideas came to an end realizing I couldn’t take it on with three small kids. To be honest, it was all making me very upset.

But one afternoon, as I sat holding the twins, and watching Ledger run around like madman, the thought quietly, but strongly, entered my mind,  “This is enough, this is more than enough.” In that moment I realized the best present I could give you this year is to love the heck out of your brothers. I realize we have many more years ahead of us to complete service projects, and hopefully run another Pay It Forward Project, but this year, I get to enjoy it with your Dad and brothers.

So that’s what we’ll be doing, nothing extravagant, but remembering you in all that we do. Eating blueberry pancakes because you were obsessed with blueberries. Finger paint or color with Ledger, and eat saltines with peanut butter and honey. I plan to pull the photo books out, the slideshows that many kind people made us, and teach your brothers all about their big sister. I’m sure we’ll make a trip to the cemetery, release some Balloons to help Ledger grasp the concept. But I hope you realize how much we love and adore you. How much we ache to have you in our life.- though the longer we go, the more I realize you are with us, we just have to learn to recognize it. We are constantly trying to live a life to be worthy to stand next to you in the end.

(1st Birthday, 2009)

I pray whoever you spend the day with, gives you a hug, since I can’t be the one to do it.

Happy Birthday sweet girl. I sure am proud to be called your Momma.

Love,

Mom and Dad

P.S. Here is the RAK’D document we used from last year, many of you requested it. Feel free to use it Smile

Happy Birthday to your little blue eyed angel. I am sure that she is surrounded by loved ones and enjoying her special day very close to your home and heart. I truly believe that loved ones surround us always, but like you said, we have to be willing to notice. May God grant you peace this day and joy in the knowledge of forever families.

    Dear Ashley,
We've never met, but your post today, on Preslee's fifth birthday made me want to give you a hug! I am so grateful for your example of faith and love. I especially loved your recent post "Death is Nothing at All". I know our family members on the other side of the veil are with us in this life. I hope you are able to feel the comfort and love from your sweet girl today as you are with her brothers.

Such a beautiful post about a beautiful little girl....the love never ends, Ashley. You are right...she is closer than you think and of course she is forever in your heart. I'm so glad for the knowledge I have to know the love goes on and we can have hope for life in the eternities with those we love. I can't begin to imagine how hard it is for you but loving your boys and doing those wonderful happy things with them and for them is a perfect way to honor your daughter. She must be so proud of her parents and brothers. She's smiling today thinking of her sweet mother and how much you love her and miss her. Thanks for being an inspiration to me. I think your beliefs and the way you live your life must inspire others too. May the Lord bless you and yours this holiday season. May His love and peace help ease your heartache just a bit. May His tender mercies rain down upon you so you feel your daughter's spirit when you need her the most.

Please let our RAK'D be in honor of Preslee and a gift to both of you. As we were walking into Walmart we picked up a few Christmas tree cards labeled "boy age 3", etc, from a group collecting gifts for foster kids. I was so touched by these kids that I don't know who might only be wishing for their mommy or daddy for Christmas, knowing that our Walmart purchased gifts would only soften the blow of what they are truly missing in their lives. In honor of Preslee, whom I also don't know, we gift these gifts to soften the blow of the birthday you wish to share with her today. I'm sure she would love to give you - her momma - that big birthday hug you so desire! Thanks so much for your example and for sharing your beautiful Preslee with all of us. You both make the world a brighter, happier place! Happy Birthday, Preslee.

PRAYING you feel her REALLY close today. That she helps to wipe the tears, that her laughs on those slideshows make you giggle, that her brothers are extra easy...sleeping and being happy...and that in that HUGE heart of yours that has an even bigger gaping hole...you will feel it FILLED with love from your family, your boys, your friends and an online world of strangers who are inspired by you!! One foot in front of the other. Four years closer to holding your sweet angel...HUGS to you.

Hi, we're the Sullengers! Life turned upside down for us in 2010 when we lost our daughter in an accidental drowning. Since then, we've documented our highs (life with all five of our kids) and our lows (struggles with grief) but amongst everthing we've experienced, we know as long as we hold on to one another we can get through anything that comes our way.
