Recovery After Having Twins

This post is for anyone expecting twins. I had wondered what recovery would be like, and found very few people who had shared their experience …

  • Many people ask, has it taken forever to heal? Though I delivered two babies, they were small (4 lbs. 10 oz. and 5 lbs. 2 oz. ) so I had very little tearing. Less than my other two deliveries.
  • I was much more hormonal and emotional after delivery than I was with my other two. I cried over everything, especially over the fact my boys were in the NICU. It was exhausting to have to get ready, and drive 20 minutes to the hospital each day.
  • I’ll admit I cried looking at my stomach after delivery. Most of my stomach is covered in stretch marks, along with my thighs. And my skin is stretched out. I’ve been told that bio oil helps with stretch marks, so that’s what I’m using. But for the stretched out skin, everyone tells me surgery is pretty much the only option. Now, seven weeks later, my stomach is looking a little better, but I have a long ways to go.
  • I had other twin moms tell me to wear a postpartum support belt to help shrink my uterus and help tighten my stomach muscles. I wore it for six weeks, and I really think it helped. The first couple of weeks my stomach muscles were sore when I took it off at the end of the day. There are probably better belts, but this is the I wore here.
  • As hard as the NICU was, I think it was a blessing, it allowed me to sleep, and recover before taking on two newborns.
  • I didn’t gain too much weight during pregnancy, (22 lbs) and didn’t swell at all, not even my feet. I give credit to the gestational diabetes diet. So I was alarmed a few days after delivery when my entire body became swollen, including my eyelids. I was HUGE, I mean massive. My legs looked like tree trunks, and I looked more pregnant than I did before delivery, I was forced to wear my maternity clothes, which fit tighter than they did while carrying the twins. After a week, I called the Doctor’s office and they explained it’s quite common with twin moms. Due to all the fluid that was pumped in me before delivery, and all the extra blood flow it takes to carry twins, I was left with an unreal amount of fluid in my body which could take up to 4-6 weeks to get rid of. I was told to keep my feet elevated as much as I could and drink as much liquid as possible. The only way to get rid of it was to sweat or to pee it out…

I slept with my feet elevated every night, and it was not only painful to get ready in the mornings because within 30 minutes of standing, my legs and feet would be completely swollen, but making a trip to the NICU became embarrassing. I could barely walk because it was difficult to bend my feet at my ankles. And I swear the entire town of Rexburg either works at the hospital or eats lunch there. I tried to hide from everyone… sorry if I came off unfriendly. Looking back I wish I would have taken a picture, I was sooo big. Now I find it pretty funny, but at the moment, I didn’t. I’ll admit I cried a lot over it. Dang hormones. (These are the only pictures I took of myself until the swelling went down. And they still don’t really show how big I was).

Long story short, about two weeks after delivery, I googled the problem and other twin moms said to drink a lot of Gatorade. I drank three large Gatorades each day for three days straight, and after two nights of staying up to use the bathroom, and having night sweats (Gross I know) I lost 15 lbs of fluid within 48 hours which put me 5 lbs. under my pre-pregnancy weight. Though I weigh less, I don’t look like it, well maybe my chicken legs do. I lost nearly all the muscle I had in my legs. I guess that’s what happens when you sit on the couch for months because you’re too big to move.

Postpartum depression? I luckily haven’t struggled with this, but from talking to other mom’s and what I’ve read, it’s much more common after a twin pregnancy. I asked Pat to be on the lookout of symptoms for me. I figured if it was something that presented itself, I wanted help at my six week appointment, or ASAP. Taking care of two newborns is hard enough, let alone dealing with depression.

Now seven weeks later, I’m ready to begin working out, start eating like I did with gestational diabetes. I’m ready to start saying goodbye to my baby weight!

I swelled like a balloon after my twins as well, and the night sweats were horrible. It would wake up soaking wet. It did go away, but it was horrible during the whole ordeal. I could feel the water moving around in my feet when I would walk. It was gross. You sound like you are doing awesome! Your boys are the sweetest.

I've never commented on here but I've been reading your blog now for about 2 years. You are an amazingly strong woman first and foremost. I really wanted to just comment on the whole saggy skin after baby...I've used the It Works wraps and it's tightened everything up in just 3 days or less. Super affordable, and safe. It's all natural! You can check them out at annahkboedeker.myitworks.com you can message me there if you have any questions! <3 have a great day!

I didn't have twins - just one really big baby (9.5 lbs). I have the stretch marks and saggy skin and I also had diastasis recti - where your abdominal muscles separate? I found that having all of this and STILL (always) coping with the loss of Max was almost too much. Like, I already feel SO unlike myself with all of this grief, I can't believe I am living in an entirely new body as well. The week after Mo was born, I spent one afternoon just crying over feeling like I looked deformed. I couldn't believe it.
The "good news" is that I was able to fix the diastasis recti. There are a ton of exercises on youtube that you can do at home that will help bring the muscles back together. I was diligent and did them basically every night (a lot of planks and stuff). The stretch marks are fading (of course it has been more than a year) - they still have a LONG way to go. And I finally started losing weight (after trying at least 5 different diets) doing "The Fast Metabolism Diet". The stretched skin is a total bummer and I really can't imagine having surgery to fix it, especially since we still want more children.
Thank you for sharing this though Ashley. I seriously looked like Shrek for both of my third trimesters and for MONTHS after both boys were born.

Thank you for the input about the Youtube videos. I'm going to start tonight, I know I have it bad.

I totally understand what you mean, I can't imagine dealing with this just after losing Preslee. I actually thought about that through my entire pregnancy. It's such an emotional roller coaster isn't it? Thanks for your comment!

It is not only twin pregnancy! I swelled so bad with my first and came home thinking I would have lost at least the size of my son, ya know 7 pounds. Nope, I lost like two. My sister actually came home weighing MORE and had to go shopping for bigger pants because her maternity ones wouldn't fit her. Pregnancy, birth and all that is different for everyone and so unpredictable. I was emotional before. Actually more a long the lines of psycho but the second I had my son the hormones went away and it felt so good to not cry anymore. I haven't tried wraps, but tucking that extra skin into my pants works wonders for me ;)

Oh my gosh, I cannot believe you only gained 22 pounds! That's awesome!! You looked so good your entire pregnancy. It kind of makes me want to cry thinking about how your two babies added up to the same weight as my last singleton baby... haha! You rocked that pregnancy and delivery, way to go!

I think this post was such a good idea! I wish I had've had more preparation for the after effects of having twins! The after delivery swelling is the absolute worse. Every part of my body had extra fluid, and it was unbelievably painful. Unfortunately (and fortunately too), mine was also related to severe preeclampsia, so I ended up in the ICU 5 days postpartum, where they gave me a diuretic through my IV, causing me to loose 35 lbs in 24 hours! THen another 10 lbs over the next 3 days. That was 4.5 GALLONS of fluid! It is unreal how much fluid your body can hold onto! It sucked having the crazy scary life threatening complications, but it was nice not to have to wait weeks for the swelling to go away. I had a huge baby with my first (9 lbs 3 oz), and the recovery with twins was WAY different. Both hard recovery's, but SO different. I wish I could tell you the bio oil works wonders. I used it, and although my stretch marks faded, they are still there. My stomach has gotten much better though. With time and hard work you can probably get a relatively flat stomach again. Make sure you take a break! I think my most emotional/ PP depression issues came after spending weeks at a time without a single break. Your boys are ADORABLE! Twins are seriously SO MUCH FUN. Mine are about to hit 18 months, and I am LOVING the stage they are at, especially watching them together. Good luck!!

That is so much fluid! I would have been scared out of my mind! My legs and feet were tender for about two weeks after. Thanks for the advice, I'll take as much as I can get.

Thank you so much for sharing your real experience. I'm 36 weeks with B/B twins and very nervous about the postpartum experience. I'm having a csection so know the recovery will be even greater. Wonder if those belts are good for after a csection or not?
    Congrats again!

Good luck with your delivery!! So exciting, but I'm sure you're anxious. The lady told me the belt was awesome for c-sections. Hope this helps.

When I had my twins I had the same experience. My boys were my first so I thought the swelling was just cause my body didn't know what it was doing. I called my feet "Hobbit Feet" from Lord of the Rings. They were like little swollen bricks and it hurt to walk. When I had my other son I didn't swell so it makes sense about the water issue. Great idea to share for others out there to know about. Had no idea it was a "normal" thing with twins. Good luck and hang in there. It gets easier as you go...

Thank you so much for sharing - especially about the water retention post birth! I am pregnant in my third trimester with twins and with my first pregnancy (my daughter) I had terrible night sweats for a week or two - but no extra retention after delivery - just the same swelling as before I delivered. I will be prepared to have it even worse after I deliver my twins! It has been nice to look up your weekly twin pregnancy posts and to see if anyone else is feeling the same symptoms as I am week by week! What a crazy ride - I can't wait for my little blessings to get here!

WOW, 22 pounds?! When I had my twins my doctor instructed me to gain at least 40 just so they would weigh enough, I'm jealous! Anyway, I second the NICU experience. I was convinced mine would go all the way to term so when one was in the NICU for 3 weeks I did not handle it well. Not sure if preparing myself would have made a difference but it sucked with all of those hormones.

Hi Ashley! Congrats on your twin boys. I have been following your blog for a few years. You are an inspiration. I had twin girls in May. I still don't feel like myself since having them. (stomach pain) I have 2 older girls as well, so I haven't made time for myself to exercise or eat right. Do you have any suggestions for healthier snacks/meals? Thank you! Good luck with your sweet baby boys. :)

I don't exercise nearly as much as I would like too, I am too exhausted most nights by the time I can get out. I found I go throughout the day with little food, and then snack on horrible foods...because they are fast. So this week I portioned out healthy snacks that I can grab when I'm feeding the babes. But for lunch I eat a lot of salads, I make one big one up, and it will stay good for a few days. I throw in either lunch meat or cut up chicken nuggets when I'm in a hurry for protein. I'm working on a post to share what I learned with gestational diabetes, hopefully it will be done soon.

Thank you so much for posting this! I'm 33 weeks with twins and they are our first. Obviously everything is new to me and I'm grateful for the "warnings" about recovery. I know everyone is not the same but it doesn't hurt to hear what you experienced! Thank you again!
