Home friends grief Her Family Holidays Pay It Forward Preslee The accident Pay It Foward

Pay It Foward

I know I'm jumping the gun a little bit, but I can't help it, I'm a planner. Last week was my niece Sophie's 2nd Birthday. Only 2 months apart, Pres and Soph were the best of friends. Every time we see Sophie, she asks where Preslee is. One time she got so frustrated she brought me a picture of her and anxiously asked, "Where Pres go?"

Photobucket

Even though Pat and I didn't make it to her Birthday party, we couldn't help but think about Preslee's Birthday coming up in December. Just 8 days before Christmas.

Like I said, I'm anything but a procrastinator. In June I was driving past a garage sale and spotted something great. I quickly turned around, grabbed Preslee from the car and set her down on the grass. Preslee immediately saw what I had, and sprinted to it. It was an Elmo play kitchen. All the gadgets made noises and Elmo even talked. She was in love, her eyes were shining. It was brand new, and I bought it for a steal of a deal, only $30. A man kindly helped me load it, and it barely fit in my alero. Preslee stared at it with a grin the entire way home. I put Preslee down for a nap and hid the little kitchen in a closet. Pat teased me endlessly that night, he couldn't believe I bought her Birthday present in July. He teased me even more because of how excited I was to give it to her. He told me to forget about December and give it to her now. Part of me wishes I had...

I remember sitting in PCMC when we realized Preslee only had a few hours left on earth with us. I held her close wrapped in her little pink blanket, trying to memorize every perfect feature on her body. The pain was overwhelming, the fear of saying goodbye was too much to bare. I couldn't help but think of all the dreams I had for her, for us, and for our family. I felt them slipping away. Then my thoughts turned to the Elmo kitchen. I asked my dad to have someone take it away before we got home. I couldn't stand the thought of never giving it to her.

So Pat and I have been thinking, what do we do for Pres on her Birthday? How are we going to make it through the day? I want to do something that would mean something to her.

I feel one thing Preslee taught me was the power of serving others. So, I want to Pay It Forward.

Primary Children's Hospital will forever be close to our hearts. When I think back to that difficult time just a few months ago, many of you were there for us. From the hundreds of comments we received, we knew we had support. I've often wondered what it would have been like without all of you?

After talking with my friend Chelsea who has also experienced life in the PICU with her little boy Kayden, we realized how we both want to give back. For Preslee's present, we want to put together a basket for parents in the PICU. Hopefully it will help them be able to stay by their child's side. So many families arrive due to an accident and don't have anything when they get there. Luckily we were surrounded by family who took care of our every need. But many families don't have that help. The fact that Preslee was never left alone was the most comforting gift we could have asked for. Family members took the night shifts and sent us to a hotel to get sleep. But many of the parents have to live at the hospital. If they're lucky they get a tiny room with one single bed. The last thing I would have wanted to do was drive to Walmart and leave Preslee's side.

Chelsea has been in contact with PCMC and there are 42 rooms in the PICU. Our goal is to have a basket for every single one of them. I think we can do it, but we're going to need help. A lot of help.

As of right now we're waiting to hear back from PCMC, with what items are allowed to be place in the baskets. Once we find out, we'll let you know. We'll need help with donations, items like granola bars or fleece blankets. We'll also need help putting the baskets together.

So I ask you, if Preslee has touched your life in anyway, Pay It Forward. Think how different the world would be if everyone served just one person. I don't think there is anything better that we could do to celebrate her Birthday. Hopefully we'll see many of you on that day making a difference.

Love,
The Sullengers and Beckstrands

I can help put them together. :) It sounds like a wonderful idea! What a great way to spend the day, surrounded by friends and family doing something worthwhile. I know that really helped me on our anniversary. My sister spent the day with me and I did a temple trip. It felt good to serve others instead of just feeling sad all day.
I love you! I hope to see you soon.

I too am one of the many that you have never met, but have followed your blog for a while now and have been deeply touched in many ways.

I made the horrible flight from local hospital to a PICU with nothing and it was 3 days before I was able to make it home to change(and race back) because, like you said, I wasn't about to leave my baby.

Please be sure to include an address where donations can be sent. I would love to pay it forward, especially knowing what a trying time it can be for families in the PICU.

With love and admiration for all you are doing one day at a time,

    Jennie

    I'd like to help.
When my daughter was in an accident (we were on vacation out of state), I needed chap stick, gum, paper and pen, even shampoo. Dh recommends a deck of cards. Something that might seem odd, but I really wanted my camera. We knew that our daughter would survive but that she would be in the hospital for quite a while and I wanted to document the experience for her (she was 14).

Preslee is such a lucky girl to have a mommy like you. I pray for you and your husband daily. I live in the Salt Lake Valley and would love to help as you post more details. A friend of mine lost their baby boy and every December on his birthday they do a family service project, its been 8 years now and its been a great way for them to celebrate his life. I think this will be a great way to get through that day and I know it will mean so much to your sweet little girl!

Your garage sale story reminds me of my own garage sale story with my daughter this past weekend. We went to one and they had that yellow and orange Little Tikes car for $5! I had to grab it! I actually had to roll her down the driveway to my car with her IN IT and during the entire way home she screamed and cried because she wanted to play with it! Guess I couldn't save it for Christmas! haha!

You guys are in my thoughts and prayers daily and this is just a small way I can say THANKS for making me a better mom and person. :)

    what a wonderful idea!

I have an amazing friend who lost her daughter at birth...and so every year {I believe its been around 25+ years now} she finds a family to serve on her birthday.

Last year she served my family.

We have 3 children- ages 3 and under. She bought them their whole entire winter wardrobe--coats, boots, socks, jammies--you name it!
    She bought it.
And boy did we need it!
...and it was a TRUE answer to our prayers. {Just the week before I was praying for help--not knowing how to take care of my kids, due to student loans--and well, just having three children so little}.
SO she came to our rescue--and it's an experience I will never forget!

From reading your blog and knowing Chelsea...something like this does not surprise me! You two are awesome and are going to have such an amazing impact on so many (more than you already have)! Wish I was able to be there and help! Such a great way to celebrate the life of a beautiful little girl and incredible way to give back from both Preslee and handsome little Kayden!

Love this! That would be awesome if you could set up a paypal account or something so that some of us that aren't close could donate.

Just another random idea that we do for my little brother (he passed away when he was 7) is we gather the family, grandmas, grandpa, and cousins and decorate a tree by his grave every year. His birthday is in December too so we do this to celebrate his birthday. We then go out to lunch as a family to celebrate him, his life, and his mission on earth and now (he has brought us so much closer together as a family). Next week marks 20 years since he passed and we still do this EVERY YEAR! It's my favorite tradition. Just a thought for your sweet family. Thanks for being so willing to share your thoughts and emotions. You truly are inspiring and are blessing so many lives, including mine. Thanks!

I've been following your blog since the first post about little Preslee. I'm in complete awe with how you and Pat have handled things. You guys are an example to my family and I. Because of your situation I now hold my boys a little longer when saying goodbye to them as I am trying to finish school. You just never know what the day has in store for anybody. Preslee sure has touched alot of people's lives with her little time on Earth.

If there is anything I could do to help out I'd be more than willing. I'll look for you to post on the blog what items you are in need of and get them to you. I live in Rexburg as well. Until then, keep your head up, you guys are in our prayers.

My brothers baby spent his first Christmas in the PCMC Nicu and he recieved so many gifts and things it made it so much easier for my brother and wife and son who was waiting at home for his baby brother to come home. As a tradition started last year on his anniversary of being at home they put things together for the families for christmas. It's amazing to help others. When David asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year I told him nothing I just wanted to help a family struggling so I'd love to help in anyway I can. I'm also going to help my Sister in Law with her things. I'm so glad you're doing this it's an amazing project to take on.

Primary Childrens is a soft spot with us also. Our first experience was when my 3 year old sister was diagnosed with cancer. Our second experience was when our first newborn was life flighted to PCMC. Jackson had a stroke in utero. We were told he was brain dead. He is six years old now, attends first grade and loves to read and play basketball!

You don't know me. I have been following your blog and I would LOVE to help donate what I can. We used to live in Shelley, ID. The Air Force has moved us to Louisiana now and where we are so far away I would need an address of where to send items to. You and your family are constantly in my thoughts. When my daughter was 4 days old she was life-flighted to PCMC. We were there for 1 1/2 months. I love this idea of a parent basket as this would have been a little thing that would have meant the world to us when we were there. It's always the little things, isn't it?
Let me know what I can do and I would love to be a part of this memorial birthday for your daughter.

We are all children if God and it amazes me that my small children wake up and ask about you and how you are doing. We live in CA and yet they ask like they know your family personally. What a special spirit it still brings into our home. Thank you for your constant testimony. My children would love the opportunity to do something for "Preslee's Mommy" count us in on a basket or two. I would love for them to personally hand pick the items so please include somwhere to send them to. Thank you again for your testimony. It helps mine grow everytime I read your blog!

Another "blog-stalker" checking in! I don't remember exactly when or how I found your blog--maybe 6 weeks ago or so. I sat and cried my eyes out as I read Preslee's story. I am in SUCH awe of your incredible spirit and strength. I seriously don't think I could hold it together the way you have if I lost a child (my greatest fear).

You have done just what I think the Savior and Preslee would want you to do: take a hard trial and turn it into a growing experience that blesses you and others. This Pay It Forward idea is perfect and amazing. I live in Davis County, just north of SLC, and would LOVE the opportunity to meet you and help deliver the baskets if I could. It would be an honor.

Echoing what many others have said, just keep us all posted on the details. THANK YOU for your angelic example--you and your daughter are BOTH angels; one in heaven and one on earth!!

    Have a wonderful day!

I just went back and read all the other posts and it jogged my brain. At first I didn't think I could donate anything (my husband is losing his job in the next few weeks), but I am a cardmaker and former SU! Demo, so I have TONS of materials to make cards with.

I would be more than happy to make a bunch of blank "Thank You" cards w/envelopes (maybe 5 to 10 per basket?)that could be added to the baskets for the parents to write in and send to people who have helped them.

Just let me know if that's something that would work with what you're planning and I'll get started. My email: mcheney1@juno.com

Hi Ashley- I don't know if you remember me from Ricks... But anyway. I have been keeping up to date on your life via your blog. I love this idea of your baskets. I have a little girl who has spent much time in the PICU and I know how hard it is to be there. I am a leader in our YW and I have told my girls about the baskets. We would love to help. We live in west jordan. We can put some together and donate in her name or we can help with delivery. Or how ever you would like us to. But you have a whole group of young girls you have inspired to serve!

looking forward to hearing more! I have sent out an email to all on my list. Its amazing how one soul really can start something so amazing as coming together like this from around the world for a single cause. We are all children of our Heavenly Father aren't we? We fought together in the "War in Heaven" and we can work together likewise now, to make this world a better place. Its becoming clearer to me. "Line upon line, precept upon precept. Here a little and there a little." Thats how my whole life has been, growing step by step. I thank you for helping in the process. You can't count me in!! (and hopefully my friends too)

    Patrick and Ashley,
I know that you hear this all the time, but I have to express to you how touched I have been reading your blog. You have AMAZING strength, and it is your faith in our Heavenly Father that is pulling you through right now. Thank you for sharing your story with those of us who don't know you personally. I check your blog every couple of days and I am reminded to hold my 3 beautiful children a little longer because of you. My sister died in the snake river when I was 12, (She was 14) I watched my parents go through some major trials together much like you are now. My parents clung to their faith and have been blessed many times over becuase of it. You WILL come through this and your prize at the end will be your precious Preslee. Please know that you have touched my life and I am so greatful to you for the things that you are teaching through your faith. I live in Utah and my husband works at the University of Utah Hospital, I would love to help you deliver anything that you make for PCMC any time. I would also like to help in any way that I can, please update when you are ready!!!

As with many others, I am also a long-time "blog-stalker", but first time commenter. I LOVE this idea. I have been so touched by your strength and grace throughout the past few months. You are amazing. A few year ago, our primary put together some boxes for our soldiers in Iraq. We sent a lot of toiletry items (they were requested the most), but we contacted several local hotels who willingly donated shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, toothpaste and even disposable razors and small cans of shaving cream. We also contacted a local dentist who supplied us with a box of toothbrushes and floss. We had what we needed and then some. Definitely contact those types of local businesses when you know for sure what the baskets will need. I will keep watching for updates to see what we can contribute.

I came across your site tonight unexpectedly, and feel compelled to tell you that your story has touched my heart. I am a mother of two, my children are ages 3 and 1, and like any mother, I adore them and love them with all my heart!. But today was one of those challenging days when the kids are extra crazy, the house is a mess, I'm tired and just want to sit down and steal a few moments to myself, maybe turn on the TV to keep them quiet for a bit. My daughter was pushing all my buttons today. I gave timeouts, talked sternly and even found myself raising my voice to her at times. I just wanted to make it until bedtime so I could restore some sanity to my day. Now, reading your story, I feel like this was a wake up call to me that I am taking things for granted here, and I need to start tomorrow anew, remembering in each moment that I am very blessed to be their mother and to have them here to hold and love. I cry tears for you. You and your daughter are inspiring people and touching hearts. From now on, I will do my best to make each moment count, even on those challenging days. Thank you and your daughter for this inspiration. You are in my prayers.

Sidd- I am crying really hard right now.... every time I read your posts I am brought to tears because of the love you have for Preslee and how pain aches at you every day. I am so sorry for the pain and memories you think and experience every day. I can't even imagine. I was very touched by you and the little toy kitchen. I know what it's like to buy something special for your child and I too have been very excited to give certain things to Wyatt. The way they light up and smile just makes your day and makes you appreciate motherhood. I look up to you and feel for you Sidd. Keep writing things down. Keep sharing your feelings. It will only help you :) Love you Sidd.

Thank you for giving me the extra push I needed to get this very same project done here in Arizona. My Son was transferred to Phoenix Childrens Hospital a year ago and I had NOTHING (at first)! Like you, I would not leave his bedside. The first night I was there, I would have loved to have had a blanket and a toothbrush at least! Anyway, since we have been home I have wanted to do this and you have now given me the inspiration to get it done! Thank you so much! You are such a good example, thank you again!!

Hi, we're the Sullengers! Life turned upside down for us in 2010 when we lost our daughter in an accidental drowning. Since then, we've documented our highs (life with all five of our kids) and our lows (struggles with grief) but amongst everthing we've experienced, we know as long as we hold on to one another we can get through anything that comes our way.
