Hospital Stay - Abbie

We Can do hard things- Hosptial Stay

Abbie was involved in a car accident her junior year of high school. She was on a date, along with two other couples headed home to get ready for their school’s homecoming dance. While driving on the highway, the suburban rolled, and all three girls were ejected from the car. The other two girls tragically passed away, and Abbie and three boys miraculously survived. Abbie broke her hip, pelvis, nose and eye socket, and spent one week in the hospital, and a month at home on bed rest. While talking with Abbie, I asked:

Q: What was one act of kindness done for you while you were in the hospital or at home on bed rest?

A: “I don’t remember much about the hospital, but I wasn’t allowed to shower for a couple weeks after the accident. My mom washed my hair in the sink, but I was desperate for a shower. About a week after being home, a family friend came to visit and brought me a gift basket filled with bath items. There was body wash, a loofah, soaps, shampoo, etc. I appreciated the gift more than she knew! I still remember how nice it was to have those items when I was finally allowed to shower.”

I also asked Keri, Abbie’s mom the same question. I thought it would be interesting getting a mother and daughter perspective.

A: “Aside from those who helped with my other five children at home, I appreciated when my best friend arrived at the hospital about 2-3 days after the accident. She came in with mini toiletries and lovingly forced me to shower, and proceeded to do my hair and make up.  I hadn’t left Abbie’s side since the accident, and it was so nice to have someone take care of me at such a difficult time.”

I loved that both of their answers were quite similar.
After having a child in the hospital, I can agree with Keri's answer. Anything that enables you to stay with your child helps immensely.

Gift Ideas:

  • I found two adorable bath sets {here} and {here} on Amazon for a decent price. Both have different scents to choose from.
  • And mini toiletries for the parents, (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, and lotion) or this one {here} I found on Amazon. And maybe even a little make up and hair supplies.

Hi, we're the Sullengers! Life turned upside down for us in 2010 when we lost our daughter in an accidental drowning. Since then, we've documented our highs (life with all five of our kids) and our lows (struggles with grief) but amongst everthing we've experienced, we know as long as we hold on to one another we can get through anything that comes our way.
